How to photograph the moon: timing, phases, and settings that work
Almost everyone has tried to photograph a beautiful big moon and ended up with a tiny, featureless white dot. The moon is deceptively hard: it's small in the frame, surprisingly bright, and it drifts across the sky faster than you'd expect. Get the timing, phase, and exposure right, though, and you can capture crater detail with modest gear.
Choose the right phase
A full moon looks impressive but is actually the worst for detail — with the sun directly behind you, the surface is flatly lit and craters cast no shadows. For texture and drama, shoot a half moon or a crescent: along the terminator (the line between light and dark), low sunlight rakes across the craters and throws long shadows that reveal the surface. Counter-intuitively, a partial moon photographs better than a full one.
Time it for the horizon
A moon high in a black sky is just a bright disc. The memorable shots put the moon near the horizon, next to a landscape, building, or mountain — where the “moon illusion” makes it look enormous and you get context and scale. That means timing your shoot for moonrise or moonset, when the moon is low. Look up the moonrise/moonset time and bearing for your date and location, and find a spot where it will come up behind your subject.
The exposure that fixes the white blob
The classic mistake is letting the camera meter the whole dark sky — it then massively overexposes the bright moon into a blown-out disc. The moon is a sunlit object, so expose it like one. The “Looney 11” rule: set aperture to f/11, and shutter speed to 1/ISO (e.g. ISO 100 → 1/100s). From there, adjust slightly to taste. This keeps detail in the surface instead of clipping it to white.
Gear and technique
- Focal length: the longer the better. 200mm makes the moon a meaningful size; 400mm+ fills the frame with detail. A crop-sensor body helps.
- Stability: a tripod plus a remote or 2-second timer — at long focal lengths the tiniest shake smears detail.
- Focus: manual focus on the moon's edge using live-view magnification; autofocus often hunts on a small bright object.
- Beat the drift: the moon moves about its own width every two minutes, so at long focal lengths keep shutter speeds reasonably fast to avoid motion blur.
Putting it together
Plan the phase (half or crescent for detail), time it for moonrise/moonset near the horizon behind a subject, expose with Looney 11, and stabilise. Do that and the “tiny white blob” turns into a sharp, textured moon hanging over a landscape — the shot you were actually trying to take.
